There is a handwritten answer to this question. However, I cannot decipher where the answer to each starts and ends. For someone who doesn't know chemistry it is hard to see an answer that might be right in front of them. Thank you for the help!
In order to explain the formation of Chemical bond in terms of electrons, Lewis and Kossel proposed a theory independently and able to explain successfully.
Lewis assumed the atom in terms of a positively charged"Kernel"(the nucleus plus the inner electrons) and the outer shell that could accommodate a maximum of 8 electrons. He further assumed that these 8 electrons occupies 8 corners of a cube which is surrounded by Kernel. In case of sodium, single electron would occupy one corner of the cube where as in case of noble gases, occupies 8 corners of the cube. This octet represents a stable electronic arrangement. Lewis postulated that atoms achieve the stable octet when they are linked by chemical bonds. In order to stable octet, atoms may lose, may gain or may share electrons.
In the formation of a molecule, only the outer shell electrons take part in chemical combination and they are known as valence electrons. G.N. Lewis introduced simple notations to represent valence electrons in an atom. These notations are called Lewis symbols.
