What are the periodic trends in atomic radius?

What are the periodic trends in atomic radius?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Atomic radius increases as we go down a column. This is because the number of orbits increase.

Atomic radius decreases as we go left to right in a period. This is because the atomic number and hence the nuclear charge increases but the number of orbits are same. So, the electrons are attracted to the nucleus more. And hence, the atomic radius increases.
