Tunicates are part of the Chordata, a phylum which includes all animals with dorsal nerve cords and notochords. Many tunicates have a larva that is free-swimming and exhibits all chordate characteristics: it has a notochord, a dorsal nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, and a post-anal tail. Adults have no notochord and the tail. They have only pharyngeal gill slits.
