Which of the following statements is true?
a. A meniscus lens is diverging if the convex surface has the same radius as the concave surface
b. a meniscus lens is converging if the convex surface has a larger radius than the concave surface
c. A meniscus lens is converging if the convex surface has a smaller radius than the concave surface
d. A meniscus lens is converging if the convex surface has the same radius as the concave surface

Solutions

Expert Solution

Meniscus lenses have two curved surfaces, convex on one side and concave on the other side. It is thicker at the center than at the edges.

A lens with one surface convex and the other concave, the latter having the greater curvature. It also is known as a diverging meniscus lens. hence for diverging meniscus lens concave surface has larger radius than that of convex surface.

Similarly for lens to be converging meniscus lens convex surface has larger radius than concave surface.

Answer : Option (b) is correct.
