4. What is the African diaspora? Discuss the history of the “beginnings” of the African diaspora in the black Atlantic world.
It is the term used to describe the mass dispersion of peoples from africa during the Transtlantic slave Trades, from the 1500's to the 1800's. According to the statement of African union, the african diaspora is composed of "People of african origin living outside of the continent, irrespective of their citizenship and nationality, and who are willing to contribute to the development of the continent and the building of the African Union.
The number of africans who were shipped across the atlantic is estimated to be around 12 million. This population movement can be considered as the migration that paved the way for the contribution of the first african community outside of the africa. More often than not, the imagination of African Diaspora especially as it relates to Black Africa, resonates with theoretical and practical reflexes of the anglo-american world. In the process, there is the tendency to consider the privileged experiences from the different parts of Europe and the americas as homogenous and representative of the diverse realities of Black African Diaspora across the various regions of the world.
