At a high school football camp the following information kept on each participant. List the highest level of measurement for each category as ratio, interval, ordinal, or nominal. a). Top three college choices - _______________ b). 40 yd Sprint time - ________________ c). Number of push ups - _______________ d). Year of birth - _________________
Here are the basic concepts of four scales:
NOMINAL: Scale with some different category and no natural ordering .
ORDINAL: A nominal scale which has natural ordering.
INTERVAL: A quantitive scale, ehich has all the properites of ordinal scale. Moreover it can measure in actual manner and not in relative manner, ie it doesnot have a absolute zero point.
RATIO: This scale has all properties of interval scale, although it is a relative scale, and has an absolute zero.
a) Ordinal ( as college names are simply nominal variable, and the condition ' top three' justifies ordering, thus ordinal data.)
b) Ratio . ( As sprint time can be measured quantitatively and has an absolute zero.)
c) Ratio. ( Similarly it can be measured quantitatively and has an absolute zero point)
d) Interval. (a Year of birth gives us he idea of the age of a person, ie it quantitatively measures the data, but it dowsnot have an absolute zero. There are different calendar with different '0' point.)
