Read the Fact Sheet on Cell Phones and Cancer Risk on the National Cancer Institute's website located within the weekly readings. Address the following questions:
1.Are the electromagnetic waves from a cell phone detrimental to your health? If so, what can you do to limit the effects?
2.What other electromagnetic waves are dangerous for you and why? What can you do about it?
1) Cell phones usually work on Radio Frequency channel which is a form of EM wave. The frequency of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation ranges from 30 kilohertzto 300 gigahertz. Exposure to ionizing radiation, such as from x-rays, is known to increase the risk of cancer.
Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy (radio waves), a form of non-ionizing radiation, from their antennas. Tissues nearest to the antenna can absorb this energy. However, There has been no evidence that use of cell phone causes cancer. It however, is repsonsible for heating. Recent research and studies have shown radio frequency electromagnetic radiation exposure do not show an increased risk of brain tumors or of other cancers of the head and neck region.
However, we can take following action to reduce exposure :
Use a device with hands-free technology, such as wired headsets
Don't go for long conversations on cell phones expecially when your cell phone is low on battery as it emits maximum when battery is low
2) A long exposure to X-rays, microwaves are dangerous for our health. We should make sure that we stay away from these waves if possible.
