What are the safety aspects of materials involved in the production of ethylene oxide, as well as the product materials (toxicity, PEL values, TLVs, upper and lower flammability limits)?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ethylene oxide is mainly produced by the vapor phase oxidation of ethylene which is used mainly in the production of ethylene glycol. It can also used as a raw material for the production of a variety of commercially useful and important materials, such as detergents and epoxide resins.

ethylene oxide has a boiling point of 50.7°F (10.4°C),ethylene oxide is a colorless, flammable gas at room temperature and pressure, and it can also be easily liquefied at conditions of 7.3 psig (50 kPa) and 70°F (21°C)

Autodecomposition temperatures which has a range from 840 to 1040°F (450 to 560°C) is observed in experimental conditions.

The lower flammable limit prescribed for ethylene oxide in air is 3% by volume, and there is no upper flammable limit as at high concentrations in air, leads to an explosive decomposition

Ethylene oxide has an ether-like odor; however, since its odor threshold of 430 ppm is well above exposure limits, odor

Continuous exposure having low concentrations of ethylene oxide can result in a loss of smell, also at high concentrations irritation of the respiratory system and eyes can occur. Ethylene oxide has been marked as an experimental mutagen and a carcinogen, so all contact should be cut short to the lowest level

Ethylene oxide is a highly reactive and flammable chemical. therefore, special precautions should be taken in its handling and storage.

Consider the pair of reactions in which ethylene (C2H4) is oxidized either to ethylene oxide (C2H4O, desired) or to carbon dioxide (undesired). Ethylene oxide is produced by the catalytic oxidation of ethylene: C2H4(g)+12 O2(g)→C2H4O(g) An undesired competing reaction is the combustion of ethylene to CO2. The feed to a reactor contains 2 mol C2H4/mol O2. The conversion and yield in the reactor are respectively 25% and 0.70 mol C2H4O produced/mol C2H4 consumed. A multiple-unit process separates the reactor outlet stream components: C2H4and O2 are recycled to the reactor, C2H4O is sold, and CO2 and H2O are discarded. The reactor inlet and outlet...
