Within the context of diversity, nurses need to recognize that dominant and variant cultural patterns will exist within the society. Health disparities are closely linked with social, economic, and environmental disadvantage. When caring for patients, nurses need to be aware of similarities and differences among the diverse patient care population. Please answer the following questions.

1. Consider the ways in which culture and ethnicity affect health. Which factors are modifiable? For which factors can nurses have an impact?

2. In addition to poor access, health care providers frequently contribute to the problem of health disparities. How can nurses avoid contributing to these disparities?

  • How a patient and health care professionals view health and disease
  • How patient believe in the cause ( in some Asian countries chicken pox is still believed to be a cause of spiritual punishment by God)

  • Acceptance of diagnosis
  • Acceptance of preventive or health promotion ( vaccine, birth control, screening test)

The nurse can have an impact when the patient has any abusal activity.The nurse has to be cautious in handling these types of patients effectively and in a good manner. Because managing a patient with withdrawal symptoms are dangerous as well.

2) Health disparity are the differences in the health care offered to an individual .It may be because of socioeconomic status , culture, language, insurance policies

The nurse can avoid these disparities in the following way

  • Respect is the base of care for patients
  • Listen to the patient needs
  • Be empathetic
  • Recognise for any CAM therapy wished by family or patient
  • Communicate in the language they understand
  • Negotiate the treatment plan if possible for patient wish after discussing with the physician.
