Discuss the relevance of the bones, musculature, nerves, lymphatics and vascular supply of the head and neck to the delivery of dental care. Give specific examples that might impact diagnostic and treatment strategies.
The importance of the bones, musculature, nerves, lymphatics, and vascular supply of the head and neck to the delivery of dental care are :-
1.Bones of the head and neck- Bones provide support to our body, from the head to toe. The dental cavity have bone support in the form of skull.
It helps in maintaining the shape of face and provide support to the teeth.
During the delivery of dental care the role of bones are very important as they help in movement and change in position of face and oral cavity and the support provided by bone will ensure that there is no breakage in teeth and disturbance in shape.
2.Muscles of the head and neck- Muscle also play an important role in the delivery of dental care because bone can't work alone without muscles and tendon .Muscles help in pulling the joints ,allow to move ,flex and extend the oral cavity during dental care.
3. Nerve supply of head and neck -Cranial nerves which originates from the brain and gives off it's branches to face and neck. The main cranial nerve which supplies the oral cavity is the trigeminal nerve. These nerves have motor function - like mastication and sensory function is to provide sensation like sensation of pain during the delivery of dental care.
4. Blood supply of head and neck- Every organ and part of the body is supplied by blood .Blood provides nutrition ,oxygen , nourishment of cells ,electrolytes etc to the body parts which are necessary for proper functioning.
Vascular supply to the oral cavity by the head and neck is very important because deficit blood will cause less nourishment of cells ,delayed healing and infection in the oral cavity.
5. Lymphatic supply - The function of lymphatic system is detoxification, provding immunity and drainage .During the delivery of dental care it is important that the lymphatic system of head and neck is functioning properly because if it does not work properly it at lead to infection, lymphedema, and lymph swelling.
Examples 1-If blood supply to the oral cavity is impaired, the treatment given for a particular disease will not be effective,as the organ is defficientof vital nutrients and essential components which will delay healing.
Example 2-If the nerve supply is affected then the patient won't be able to recognize any sensation and would not be able to differentiate and this may cause injuries.
Example 3-If the bones and muscles are not functioning properly then the examination of oral cavity ,any surgerical procedures etc will be difficult to do as there is no function of movements and flexibility.
