What would you do in each situation to prevent an inaccurate pulse oximetry reading?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  1. Check for the signal in oximetry
  2. The probe in the pulseoximetry should be positioned correctly on the finger
  3. Choose a correct size probe and handle with care ,as probes are fragile
  4. Reposition the probe if positioned incorrect
  5. The oximetry cannot detect the oxygen saturation and pulse if patient has poor perfusion. So warm the fingers then position the probe.
  6. Removing nail polishes or paint which may cause inaccurate readings
  7. Tell the patient to be calm and donot move the fingers ,as the probe may be unpositioned.
  8. Bright light such as sun light or the operating light on the probe may interfere with the light detector and cause inaccuracy, so avoid bright light.
  9. Patients involved in fires, or who have inhaled smoke may have significant amounts of Hb combined with carbon monoxide (CO). Most oximeters cannot detect this and tend to exaggerate the SpO2
  10. Daily charge the oximetry fully
  11. When the probe gets dirty clean it gently with a damp cloth or alcohol swab , so that readings will be accurate
  12. Ensure that the pulse oximetry is in good condition
