Worksheet 16-1: Estimating the Calorie and Fluid Requirements of Adult

1.   Calculate the estimated calorie requirements for the male ( height 5’8 and 165 lbs) using the Mifflin-St. Jeor Energy Estimation Formula.

2.   Calculate the estimated calorie requirements for the female (67 inches, 190 lbs) in question #2 using the Mifflin-St. Jeor Energy Estimation Formula.

3.   Using the “1 mL water per calorie of food ingested” method, estimate the fluid needs for the male and female.

4.   Using the 30-40 mL of fluid/kg method, estimate the fluid needs for the male and female.

5.   How does the estimated fluid needs differ between the two sets of equations?

6. Calculate the BMI and ideal body weight for both (2).

7. Using the exchange system, develop a meal plan for the day based on the caloric recommendation. Hint: breakfast, lunch dinner and snack. Calculate the carbs, protein and grams for each meal. (2 pts)

8. Calculate the protein requirement for this patient. (0.5 pt)

1Mifflin St Jeor derived a formula to find the resting metabolic rate.RMR is the total amount of calories which is burned while at rest

Formula for Men=10*weight(kg)+6.25*height(cm)-5*Age+5

Since no age is given,e will put the age as 40

convert pound to kg by using the formula

1 pound=0.454

165*0.454=75 kg

convert inches to cm using the formula

1inch=2.54cm

5ft*12in=60in

60in+8in=68in

68in*2.54cm/1in=172.7cm

10*75+6.25*172.7-5*40+5=1227.16 calories per day.

2 Formula is 10*weight(kg)+6.25*height(cm)-5*Age-161.

10*86+6.25*170-5*40=2597.46

3 Formula is (bodyweight-20)*15+1500

Males=2325 mlie (75-20)*15+1500

Females=2490ml ie (86-20)*15+1500

males greater than 19=3.7l/day

females greater than 19=2.7l/day

4 Weight inkg*25-35ml=ml of fluid required daily

males=75*30=2250ml

females =86*30=2580ml

6 BMI=Divide wt in kg/height in metre,

divide it by height

MEN=75/1.727=43.42then 43.42/1.727=25.14kg/m2

female-86/1.702=50.52 then 50.52/1.702=29.68kg/m2

ideal body weight=wt in kg+2.3kg= for males75+2.3kg=77.3kg

For females 86+2.3kg=88.3kg
