Answer:
Normal flora is the term used to
refer the mixture of organisms that can be found regularly at any
of the anotomical site in humans. Although the majority of these
normal flora are bacteria, there are few eukaryotic fungi and
protists too that can be found in human body.
Let us take the human
gastrointestinal tract (GI Tract) as an example of normal
flora site in humans.
- Lactobacillus is a
Gram-positive,rod shaped, facultative anaerobic bacteria found in
human GI tract.
- They forms the majority of the
lactic acid bacteria group that converts sugar into lactic
acid.
- They shows a mutualistic
relationship with human by protecting the host against pathogens
and in return derives the required source of nutrients from the
host.
- They help human guts from
contracting infections from the fungal pathogen-Candida albicans
that too are found in human guts,by producing hydrogen peroxide,a
growth and virulence inhibitor of these pathogens.
- Lactobacillus together with other
probiotic organisms that are found in milk, yoghurt etc, increases
the immunity of mucous intestines by raising the number of
immunoglobulin A antibodies.
- In children, these bacteria helps
in reducing the chances of dermatitis by secreting an
anti-inflammatory proteins called cytokines.
- In total, these bacteria plays an
important role in the human digestive health by influencing the
immune system and protecting the GI from various other pathogens
and virulences.
