2. A) ovum has some amount of reserve nutrition. But that's not enough to survive till implantation. blastocyst is in the uterine cavity and the endometrium is in secretory phase due to the action of progesterone. The blastocyst derive nutrition from this endometrial secretions. Endometrial secretions is the major source of nutrition till implantation and also till the development of proper Utero-placental circulation.

B) normally placental separation occurs within 15 -30 min after delivery. ( If placental separation does not takes place with in 30 min, it's called as retained placenta)

Placental separation fails in case of the following conditions.

  • If the placenta is morbidly adhered to the uterine wall or invading the uterine layers. (Placenta adherans, placenta accreta, increta, percreta)
  • If the uterus is not adequately contracted or in presence of any uterine anomalies
