Ulcers are commonly seen in a significant number of people. Globally, the risk of mortality and necessity for hospitalizations due to peptic ulcer has been declining. A peptic ulcer seems as a sore/acid-induced lesions on the lining of the digestive tract. Gastric and duodenal ulcers are types of peptic ulcers. Ulcers form in the lining of the stomach is called Gastric ulcers. Duodenal ulcers form in the lining of the duodenum (upper part of the small intestine).
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is accountable for most of the duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcers. Prevalence of this infection is high in people belongs to lower socioeconomic status, developing countries, certain etninicities and is commonly developed in childhood period. Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) especially ibuprofen and aspirin are also a risk factor of developing peptic ulcers.
Health conditions such as cirrhosis of liver, pancreatitis, sepsis, shock and large hiatal hernia are connected with occurrence of duodenal ulcers. Stress and injury are also considered s a risk factor for developing peptic ulcers
