Ans 1 - ice application is used primarily to reduce inflammation which results in reduction of swelling and pain, enumerating the cases where its used

a) head trauma which has caused scalp swelling

b) peri - orbital edemadue to trauma

c) after dental procedures - doctor advices to take cold ice creams

d) blunt trauma anywhere in body

Ans 2 - Easiest way to apply ice is nowadays we have ready made ice pack available in market having two bags in one wherein outer bag has water and inner bag has ammonium nitrate. if it is not there then keep water in freezer to form ice cubes,wrap ice cubes in cotton cloth or plastic and apply on area where it is to be applied.

Ans 3 - In addition to ice application we can use topical anti-Inflammatory ointments like dicolfenac gel or oral anti-Inflammatory tablets like diclofenac, ibuprofen etc, there are anothe category of drugs whic have proteolytic property which helps in reducing swelling faster eg. seratiopeptidase, trypsin,chymotrpsin, rutoside etc.

Ans 4 -ice is to be applied for 8-10 minutes at one place and one should keep changes position slightly to avoid cold damage to skin. one should stop when he/she starts feeling numbness over that area, if applied for longer time can cause FROST BITE due to lack of blood flow.
