according to Darwin how did " descent with modification" occur?

which three factors were necessary for natural selection to occur among the finches on Daphne major in the grants study?

Solutions

Expert Solution

According to Chales Darwin, the theory of evolution is based on fundamentals of decent of modification which is defined as the passing traits or genetic information from parents to their offsprings. According to Darwin there were three factors responsible for descent to modification to occur: mutation, migration and genetic drift.

In Grants study, the factors responsible for natural selection to occur among the finches on Daphne major are

  1. The environmental factor of drought of 1977 which lasted for 551 days. Due to this the next generation was observed to have larger beaks.
  2. The reproduction factor observed where female finches are more likely to mate with male finches of same size beak.
  3. The natural advantage for medium finches with larger beaks for their access to alternate food sources as they crack open larger seeds. In contrast the small beak size finches cannot, hence they starved and died.

Charles Darwin described evolution as "descent with modification." meaning that species change through time. A great deal of evidence indicates that life has evolved over time and continues to evolve. Natural selection is the primary mechanism by which evolution takes place. Darwin used observations of homology from comparative embryology to support his hypothesis of “descent with modification.” Which of the following observations about the role of Hox genes in the development of insects and mammals are consistent with Darwin’s hypothesis? Select all that apply. (Note that all of these statements are true, but not all of them offer support for his perspective. You’ll need to apply what you know both about Hox genes and the idea of descent with modification, to...
