A capacitor is constructed in the following way: a 1:00m2 layer of conductor, followed by a 0:20mm thick 1:00m2 layer of fused quartz, followed by a 1:00m2 layer of conductor, followed by a 0:40mm thick 1:00m2 layer of pyrex, followed by a 1:00m2 layer of conductor.

(a) Calculate the capacitance of this capacitor.

(b) Calculate the potential across each of your individual capacitors if you apply 5V across the entire capacitor.

(c) Calculate the field inside each capacitor if you apply 5V across the entire capacitor.

(d) If I continually raise the voltage across the capacitor, which dielectric will break down first? At what voltage does this occur?

When a conductor e.g. metal or carbon is immersed in a electrolyte, electric double layer will be formed at the interface of the solid electrode and electrolyte. The equilibrium potential is related to the double-layer formed at the interface. Under the certain circumstance, the double-layer on the interface can disappear, the potential at which no double-layer is called “point of zero charge”. Please explain how it happens. (hint: the double layer is formed due to the difference of free energy...

A circuit is constructed with an AC generator, a resistor, capacitor and inductor as shown. The generator voltage varies in time as ε =Va - Vb = εmsinωt, where εm = 120 V and ω = 231 radians/second. The inductance L = 155 mH. The values for the capacitance C and the resistance R are unkown. What is known is that the current in the circuit leads the voltage across the generator by φ = 49 degrees and the average...

Statistics based on polls can be faulty if the poll is constructed in such a way as to encourage a particular answer. If a question is worded "Do you feel you should be taxed so some people can get paid for staying home and doing nothing?" it is likely to get a lot of "no" responses. On the other hand, the question "Do you think the government should help people who are unable to find work?" is likely to get...
