1. a. The nurse can respond by sharing her ideas about the questions asked by the client .

Causes for constipation :

• Eating foods low in fiber.
• Not drinking enough water.
• Stress.
• Eating large amounts of milk and cheese.
• Restricting to have bowel movements.
• Changes in normal routine like going to bed at different times and having meals at different times.
• Hypothyroidism and diabetes.

Non pharmacological ways to treat constipation :

• Eating foods high in fiber like rice , whole grain , bananas , oranges etc .
• Drink more water .
• Exercise enough which helps in increasing bowel movements.
• Drink coffee .
• Have a good meal pattern and time .

2. a. Laxatives helps in increasing the stool motility , bulk and frequency. It also promotes regular bowel movements.

Then nurse can ask about ,

• Previous medical conditions .
• Lifestyle habits.
• Any contraindications to drugs .
• The patients preferred choice of administering drug.
• Observe the patient if he is admitted for chronic constipation and check his bowel frequency by asking it to him.
• In case of laxative suppository it can be administered with the patient lying down and gently pushing the pointed end of suppository about one inch gently into the anus.
