Juan Rodriquez, a 52-year-old male, had a routine screening colonoscopy last week. He was asked to come into the office for the results this morning. Mr. Rodriquez was diagnosed with colon cancer and is scheduled for surgery to remove the tumor in 2 days.

What psychosocial concerns should the nurse anticipate in caring for Mr. Rodriquez and his family?

Mr. Rodriquez has the surgery and is recovering without complications. His oncologist has discussed radiation therapy with Mr. Rodriquez and his wife. When the nurse comes into his room, Mr. Rodriquez says, "I thought all the cancer was gone when they took the tumor out! Now the doctor says I need radiation therapy. My friend had radiation therapy and he had burns! I don't want burns!"

What actions should the nurse take to address Mr. Rodriquez's concerns?

Four years later, Mr. Rodriquez is back in the hospital with a bowel obstruction. He has been cancer-free since the surgery and radiation therapies were completed. Mr. Rodriquez states "The doctor said this bowel obstruction was caused by the surgery or the radiation. How can that be?"

How should the nurse respond to Mr. Rodriquez?

Expert Solution

Giving psychosocial support by showing empathy attending their needs.Initially need to teach patient about condition treatment. Give more concentration to life style modifications this will give positive energy to the patient for recover.Teach care of patient to family members and make them to involve in care.

Nurse can teach about radiation therapy giving radiation more than needed will result in burns. Also without little complications radiation therapy is impossible so it may or may not occur .But ensure inorder to get rid of cancer it is necessary now.Always provide true information never give false hopes to patients. So must enlist possible complications after treatment.Teach about warning signs and when to contact to hospital.

Previously we mentioned about complications. So make patient ready for present treatment.

Whatever the condition it is responsibility of the nurse to give positive thoughts to patient, showing concern to them, meeting their needs, recovering from disease, denote patient role for family and make them recover soon and education about life style modifications after treatment if not what complications will occur also must be mentioned.
