Language development

Development of the child most likely to take place in the earlier stage of life. it is a process in which children communicate and understand language slowly.

New born left hemisphere is sensitive for language. The first roll, smile and word is called developmental milestone. These millstones help the healthcare provider to understand the growth and development pattern and to identify any upcoming disease or problem.

Language millstone for nurse’s assessment are:

1. At birth the child attunes to human voice and develops differential voice recognition of parents.

2. At 2-3 months- cooing and music sound such as ooh-ooh, aah-aah.

3. At 6 months- babbling mixing of vowels and consonants such as ba, ba

4. At 9-12 months- jargoning such as baba, dada

5. 12 months- 1-3 words, mama papa etc. And understand simple command and respond to own name.

6. 18 months- 20-50 words and beginning to use two-word phrase and forming word combination.

7. At 2 years- use of 2-word telegraphic sentence such as momma come and intelligible child speech about 25-50%

8. At 3 year- the child speech is 75% intelligible and can speak 3-word sentence. And understand direction given.

9. 4-5 years- like tilling stories, start questioning and uses sentences.
