Light passes through following structures to get to the rod and cone cells in retina from the outside:

  1. The light enters the eye through cornea which is like a clear window at the front of the eye. Cornea transmits and focuses the light into the eye.
  2. This focused light is now passes through pupil of the eye which is the opening in the center of the iris that acts as camera shutter and controls the amount of light that gets inside the eye.
  3. After this, light passes through the lens of the eye which is convex in nature and refracts the light in order to focus it on retina.
  4. The light travels through the vitreous humor which is dense, transparent, gel-like substance that fills the central cavity of the eye and helps the eye in holding it's spherical shape.
  5. Finally, the refracted ray of light is focused on retina which consist of rods and cone cells that sense the light and create electrical impulses that are sent to the brain through the optic nerve for image visualization and processing.
