Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Answer is A. The newly synthesized RNA is referred as pre mRNA and it is modified or processed to form mature mRNA. Major modifications that occur in this process are:

a. addition of 5' cap at the starting of mRNA and the addition of the poly A tail at the end of it.

b. Removal of introns and the exons are joined together. The process is known as RNA splicing.

The AAUAA sequence is known as a polyadenylation signal and it decides the site of addition of the poly A tail. This sequence occurs 10 to 35 nucleotide upstream of the site of cleavage where the endonuclease will cut the nascent mRNA and generate a free 3'OH group. This serves as a site for poly-A tail addition.

2. The answer is d.

one amino acid is coded by three nucleotides, hence to code for 300 amino acid we need 900 nucleotides pairs.

Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of decent with modification? Individual organisms decide which traits to pass onto offspring. Individuals in each generation differ slightly from the members of the preceding generation. Over long time periods, small differences accumulate to produce major transformations. Traits which are advantageous tend to become more prevalent in subsequent generations.
