Which of the following is not true of hormones?
Select one:
a. Hormones affect only one specific tissue at a time.
b. Hormones are released directly into body fluids and tissues.
c. Hormones affect a wider range of the body compared to neurotransmitters.
d. Hormones are relatively slow acting compared to neurotransmitters.
A. Hormones affect only one specific tissue at a time. This statement is false.
Explanation -- hormones are the chemical substances which are produced by the body at some particular site and are released to the target organ or tissue located within body. They do not solely act on a specific area where they are produced but are released via blood stream to the targeted organ Or tissue. They have wide range of functions to perform all together at one single time. They serve as messengers, controlling and coordinating activities throughout the body. Therefire the first statement given is not correct.
Hormones are releases directly into the body fluid and tissue. The glands where hormones are produced are endocrine glands, which are Ductless glands. Since they do not posses duct therefore the hormones are directly released into the body fluid through the bloodstream.
Neurotransmitters are the substances produced within a synapses and act at synpatic cleft. They are localised to synpatic junctions whereas hormones act on the distant site ie., target organ of body and this act at a wide range of body.
Neurotransmitters act quickly within milliseconds to produce their response wheras hormones may take few hours to days to act on specific target organ.
