AFRICAN NATIONALISM:

African nationalism is an umberlla term which refers to a group of political ideologies, mainly within sub-saharan Africa, which are based on the idea of national self determination and the creation of nation states. The ideology emerged under European colonial rule during the 19th and 20th centuries and was loosely inspired by nationalist ideas from europe.Originally , African nationalism was based on demands for self-determination and played an important role in forcing the process of decolonisation of africa (1957-1966). However , the term refers to a board range of different ideological and political movements and should not be confused with pan africanism which may seek the federation of several or all nation states in africa.

Overall,African nationalism developed as a reaction to colonial rule with the goal of achieving independence for the nation-states created under colonialism.Led mostly by Western-educated African elities,African nationalism led to the achievement of political independence by forty African countries by the late 1980s.

The reason for african colonisation were mainly economic, political and religious.During this time of colonisation,an economic depression was occuring in Europe, and powerful countries such as Germany,France, and Great Britain, were losing money.

African nationalism exists in an uneasy relationship with tribalism and sub national ethnic nationalism which differ in their conceptions of political allegiance. Many africans distinguish between their ethnic and national identities.some nationalists have argued that tribes were a colonial creation. As a leaders and activists, women participated in african nationalism through national organisations .

EUROPEAN NATIONALISM:

In 19th Century,Nationalism played very significant part in the progress of Europe.Because of common national-identity,various small states were united and transformed into a country, such as germany and italy. The rise of nationalism in Europe initiated with the spring of nations in 1848.According to leon-baradant , nationalism calls on people to identify with the interest of their national group and to support the creation of a state a nation state to support those interests.Romanticism spread through the continent taking it by storm. Some of the countries of the state formed union under a common national identity. The French revolution is one of the reason why nationalism spread through the europe.

Thus african nationalism is different from nationalism in europe elsewhere in the world.
