Choose one of the following activities:

  1. Go to your local library and see what books or sections of the library they have for those that do not speak English. You might want to meet the Librarian for a tour of how the library accommodates (or does not accommodate), different cultures and languages.
  2. Contact the HR department or someone familiar with policies & protocols at your facility and see what policies /resources they have for employees and/or patients where English is not their first language.

After you have visited your chosen area, discuss the following:

Do the resources you found match the population in your community? If they do, what else could be provided (provide at least three recommendations), if they do not how can you as a nurse encourage adaptation of resources for those of differing cultural backgrounds and/ or languages (provide at least three suggestions).

Solutions

Expert Solution

Different places and countries have different policies and protocols about the facilities of non English speakers in their region. But in case of hospitality it is always humanity to provide a professional health care interpreters or translator to the patients, families and those who are encouraged to speakk about.

  1. Provide professional interpreters : Because the communication between physician and patient or nurse and patient should be clear or else it may mislead the diagnosis.
  2. Using ad hoc interpreters : This means allows the relatives, family members, friends or hospital employees to translate the speaker. But the studies shows that almost 23% to 52% of the phrases and words will not be accurate when using the ad hoc interpreter.
  3. Provide multilingual professionals : Then there is no chance to get doubt about what the patient realy means. Because the physicians itself is able to understand the langue of the patient and there is no need of a translator.
