the Sun displays limb darkening. For all the planets in the solar system, predict whether or not you expect to also observe limb darkening . Explain your predictions.

Solutions

Expert Solution

* Limb darkening phenomenon Comes under astrophysics,

* Limb darkening is an optical effect  seen in stars and  the Sun,  where the central part of the disk appears brighter than the edge, or limb.

* Limb darkening, gradual decrease in brightness of the disk of the Sun or of another star as observed from its centre to its edge, or limb.

* This phenomenon is readily apparent in photographs of the Sun

* Such limb darkening occurs because the solar atmosphere increases in temperature with depth.

*   At the centre of the solar disk, an observer sees the deepest and warmest layers that emit the most light.

*   At the limb, only the upper, cooler layers that produce less light can be seen.

*   Observations of solar limb darkening are used to determine the temperature structure of the Sun’s atmosphere.

*   Information derived from such observations is applied in studying other stars.

* A filtered image of the Sun in visible light, showing the limb-darkening effect as a dimmer luminosity towards the edge or limb of the solar disk.

* The effect is more pronounced at the blue end of the spectrum and less pronounced at the red.

* Limb Darkening of the sun

* As per the studies limb darkening may be limited to sun and brightest stars.

I.       According to Kepler’s Law, the planets in our solar system move in elliptical orbits around the Sun. If a planet’s closest approach to the Sun occurs at t = 0, then the distance r from the center of the planet to the center of the Sun at some later time t can be determined from the equation r = a (1 – e cos f) where a is the average distance between centers, e is a positive constant that...

Observing the solar system model of concentric circles with center being the sun. The Earth is 1 AU from the sun. 1 AU is equal to about 150 million kilometers (93 million miles). Using a scale factor of 1010 meters per astronomical unit (AU); let say that the Earth is 15 meters away from the sun. And let say, Earth takes on an average 365 days to complete a full cycle around the sun. How far Earth travels in its...
