How does knowing what is usual help people and corporations and government organizations plan? For example, how do airplane manufacturers use the normal height to design aircraft seating?
Firstly we have to understand the concept of standard measure. The standard measure is a set of observations, calculation, analysis, data collections, surveys that are conducted on a variety and diversity of people, community, populations to get a data that can help us determine the average standard value that can be used to consider various factor while using for applications. In the given airplane example, the airplane designers while designing for seating arrangement have to take into account the smallest, average and the largest height size and length to accommodate all kinds of passengers and make their flight comfortable and the experience as equal as possible considering all the variations in heights according to various populations and regions, etc.
Similarly by knowing the usual about the people in terms of the habits, healthcare needs, chronic disease prevalence, population preferences, understanding usual problems we can get a clear picture as to have an average idea about the "usual" in the particulate community, society or a country. This data when known by the companies, corporations ad the government can help them to accommodate and ensure maximum individuals are covered under the specific health plan or employee benefit programs, etc. The "usual" or standard values are determined by constant survey efforts by the government agencies and private survey conducted by the companies and corporations before and during formulation, ratification and implementation of a plan or a policy.
