Why would an anxiety medication such as Klopin be held before a VATS procedure?
what is VATS
Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to diagnose and treat problems in your chest.
During a VATS procedure, a tiny camera (thoracoscope) and surgical instruments are inserted into your chest through one or more small incisions in your chest wall. The thoracoscope transmits images of the inside of your chest onto a video monitor, guiding the surgeon in performing the procedure.
KLONOPIN
Klonopin is a medication known as a benzodiazepine. The mediation is used to treat seizures, panic attacks, and anxiety. Sometimes the medication is used as a secondary medication to treat symptoms of mania in people with bipolar disorder.
Klonopin reduce abnormal electrical activity in the brain, which is why they are often used to treat anxiety
During vats procedure patient may abe anxiuos , the main thing we need for VATS is spontaneous breathing under local anaesthesia, which cannot attain if patient is anxious.KLONOPIN will reach peak concentration levels within one to four hours after administration, and the speed of absorption will vary from one person to the next. The effects of the drug can last for up to twelve hours.
Klonopin is given before VATS is to reduce the anxiety .benzodiazepines are commonly known as downers or sedatives as they depress centarl nervous system.. Perioperative anxiety is found to be correlated with increased autonomic fluctuations and increased requirement of anesthetic, elevated incidence of nausea and vomiting, and augmented pain during postoperative period . As a result of these complications, it was reported that recovery period and the length of hospital stay were extended . High levels of anxiety were seen in many patients during the preoperative period and all patients had different levels of anxiety.
All these can be managed if we are giving a anxiety reducing medicine prior to preocedure VATS
