A. What group/which people were the first conservationists of wildlife in the U.S.? _________________________________________
B. What are TWO results of a situation where all the predators of a prey animal are killed off? 1. ________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. ________________________________________________________________________________________
C. Name one of the 12 primary objectives of fur trapping ____________________________________________
D. List two options for handling the deer overpopulation situation in Virginia. 1. __________________________________________________________________________________ 2. __________________________________
E. What is now the top predator of deer in Virginia? _________________________
F. There are more trees in Virginia now than before the colonists arrived in America. YES / NO
G. Which has more animal species, an even-aged old growth forest or uneven-aged forest? ____________________
A. Depending on the source, it would be Johm Muir and the Sierra Club (founded in 1892) OR, Theodore roosevelt's Boone and Crocket Club (1887). It s worth mentioning that Sierra Club is a proper environmental organization, whereas the Boone Club is more about fair game hunting (i.e. hunting responosibly, letting population recover, etc.).
B. One, the population of the prey animal may grow out of control. This causes number two: big numbers in prey populations can cause environmental imbalance by consuming greater quantities of resources. An example: In an area in the mountains in Mexico, there was a population of cougars. They would come dow to kill cattle every now and then, and so the farmers hunted them all. The lack of cougars in the area caused the population of wild and feral pigs to grow too much (number 1) and they started eating the crops, which, obviously, was bad for the farmers as well (number 2).
C. Maintaining control over population sizes. According to several sources, many species have more offspring than the habitat can support, and this can cause it to collapse eventually, if the populations are not handled via fur trapping.
D. One of them would be deer hunting. Otherwise known as open season. When populations grow too much, permission to hunt is granted in order to manage the population growth. Another option is deer bith control. Which uses a type of "vaccines" that prevent does from having ofsspring for a few seasons. No offspring = no population growth.
E. Coyotes
F. NO
G. This is difficult to estimate, given the wide biodiversity of animal in any forest. From ants and other insects,to big game such as deer and cougars. A complete, reliable survey can not be carried out. However, a partial one could. The results, however, would not be very trustworthy, since there wil always be many outliers. An intuitive answer would be that there is more diversity in uneven-aged forests due the variety of different aged trees. Younger trees would be home to different animal species than older trees. Zones in the forest which have older trees would be preferred by certain species of birds and rodents, while areas with younger trees will be preferred by other species.
