You observe that Mr Q appears to have some decreased active hip extension range of motion as a result of decreased hip flexor muscle length.
a) You determine that the iliopsoas and tensor fascia latae muscles are shortened. Describe the home programme (one exercise for each muscle) that you provide to Mr Q to specifically improve the length of (1) iliopsoas and (2) tensor fascia latae. List all exercise variables (sets, repetitions, frequency, and duration).
Dear Student,
In this particular case, we have the information that decreased active hip extension range of motion suffered by Mr. Q is due to the shortened iliopsoas and tensor fascia latae muscles.
1)To improve length of iliopsoas:
One of the best home exercise for this is Fencers stretch:
- Place your right foot forward with a bent knee and then turn the right foot slightly so that toes point to the left. Then stretch the left leg out straight behind you with the foot pointing ahead . Make sure the heel should be on the floor with the spine erect and hands placed on waist. Then bounce the upper body backward until a stretch is felt at the groin.
-Hold on for around 30 seconds
-Do 20-30 bounces
-Now change the legs and repeat
- Do this exercise atleast twice a day.
2)Tensor Fascia Latae
Static standing Tensor fascia latae stretch:
- Stand erect first and then come into an extended hip position by stepping the right foot behind.
- Then rotate your right hip by 45degrees externally and adduct your right hip by stepping the right foot back behind the other foot.
- As you drive your hip forward, stretch is created in the tensor fascia latae muscle.
-Repeat on the other side.
- Repeat this exercise daily with 1-4 repetitions and each repetition holding on for 20-30 seconds.
Hope you are clear..!!!
