What test would you proform to identifying this clear liquid unknow? 2. Explain why you selected the test ? 3.if a substance is not water soluble, the electrical conductivity test cannot be used determine wether the substance contains ionic bonds or covalent bonds why?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution :-

To identify the unknown liquid we can take the following test

Solubility test with = This gives the idea about if the substance is soluble in water or not

If it is soluble then it is polar compound and if it insoluble in water then it is non polar compound.

pH paper test = This test help to identify if the compound is acidic or basic in nature. Yellow color means neutral compound , red color means acidic compound and blue to green color means basic compound.

Boiling point test :- Using this test we can determine the boiling poinst of the substance

Burnic test :- This test helps to understand the nature of the compound if it burns with sooty flame then it is aromatic compound.

These are some general tests which we can use to identify the uknown liquid.

When the substance is insoluble in water then we cannot use the conductivity test to determine if it is ionic or covalent compound because conductivity test only shown by the ionic compounds which are soluble in water and forms ions. So if the compound is not soluble then it is may be having ionic bonds but it is insoluble in water therefore we cannot conclude if it is ionic or not. So we cannot use the conductivity test when compound is insoluble in water.
