how do i interpret mean, mode and median?

how do i interpret mean, mode and median?

Solutions

Expert Solution

We interpret the mean, median and mode has following formulae with example.

Mean :- It is defined as the sum of all the observations divided by the total number of observations.

Interpretation of mean :- The mean is average value of the given data.

The formula of mean is as

For example:- Find mean of following data

15, 18, 24, 28, 32

Here. n = total number of observations = 5

By using the above formula of mean

The mean of all values in the data is 23.4

2) Median :- Median is the middle or central values of the data arranged as ascending or descending order.

Interpretation of median - Median is the middle or central value of the ascending or descending data.

If N = the total number of values in given data

We first arrange the given data into ascending order.

1) For odd values

Median = value of (N + 1)/2th observation.

2) For even values

Median = value of average of the middle two observations.

For example :- Find median of given data

13, 10, 15, 12, 18

First we arrange the above data in ascending order.

10, 12, 13, 15, 18

Here, N = total number of observations = 5

Median = value of (N + 1)/2th observation

= value of (5 + 1)/2th observation

= value of 3rd observation

Median = 13

Mode = Mode is the value which has occurred maximum number of time in the data.

Interpretation of Mode :- Most frequent or maximum repeated value in the data are considering mode of given data

For example :-

1, 3, 2, 6, 2, 9, 11, 2, 3, 7, 2

Here, the value 2 has occurred 4 times and which has maximum repeated value as compared to the other values in data.

Mode = 2.

Summary :- The interpretation of mean, median and mode is as below

1) The mean is the average value of the given data.

2) The median is central or middle value of the given data.

3) The mode is most repeated or most frequent value in the given data.
