  • 1.Intersections:-The view that women experience oppression in varying configurations and in varying degrees of intensity. Cultural patterns of oppression are not only interrelated, but are bound together and influenced by the intersectional systems of society. Examples of this include race, gender, class, ability, and ethnicity.
  • In other words, certain groups of women have multi-layered facets in life that they have to deal with. There is no one-size-fits-all type of feminism.
  • A black woman's experience of inequality is different from that of a white woman's experience or a black man's.
  • 2.Patriarchy-It is a system of society where the men are the head-of-the-household, carry the most power and where the family lineage passes on through men. An example of a patriarchy society is where men hold the control and make all the rules and women stay home and care for the kids. Even today, some women are preferred to stay at home and not work outside homes and also abide by the decisions of their husband and family, especially prevalant in rural areas.
  • 3.Male gaze-In feminist theory, the male gaze is the act of depicting women and the world, in the visual arts and literature, from a masculine, heterosexual perspective that presents and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the male viewer.
  • In advertising also this happens a lot, like the axe effects advertisement. The so-called effect is supposed to draw hordes of women to a man who has sprayed the Axe deodorant.
  • The women here are portrayed as cattle with no mind of their own and their sexual desires are only activated when the said deodorant is sprayed. Their appearance too is decided by the male preference: thin and only wearing a bikini. They fight with each other, push their counterparts down and leash at that one man, who is portrayed as the epitome of women’s desires.
  • 4.Performing gender- Gender is labelled by the way you present yourself physically and the way you act whether it is masculine or feminine. Gender as a performative gives great examples that masculinity and femininity are not constant therefore we can make the assumption that gender isn’t biologically based.
  • Gender is performed in many different ways. Transgendered, transsexual, cross dressing or drag are a couple examples of how gender is performed. Transgendered is a great example of this because the girl you are seeing on the street by the way you recognize them may in fact be mistaken and be biologically a girl.
  • Cross dressers, are another great example of how gender performativity. Something as simple as using the bathroom of their own biological sex can put people at risk for judgement based on how society perceives their gender even today.
