Over the years, one of the main focuses of the Humanities has been the “struggles” of many of the historical figures suffered from mental illness, depression, and drug addiction. They had to overcome a number of obstacles. Overall, they suffered as they created the art that we have come to know and love. Some of those figures include, Vincent van Gogh, Emily Dickinson, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, Ray Charles, and Elvis Presley. In addition to struggling with their personal demons, some of these artists were only recognized posthumously ( after their deaths).

Many would argue that today’s artist, entertainers, and writers have to face few struggles, if any. Today’s entertainers became overnight sensations because of vehicles like YouTube and shows like “The Voice” and “American Idol”. Instead of spending years as a “starving artist,” one million views on YouTube can catapult a virtul uknown person into the spotlight. Once a video goes viral on the Internet, life for the feautured “star” of the video will forever be changed.

In light of today’s technology, is there such a thing as a “struggle” anymore? Explain your reasoning by giving examples.

I think there is still the same struggle and personal demons with today's stars. It is just more easily hidden as it is bad publicity. Look at Robin Williams for instance. He battled his own personal demons and hid it very well. He managed to have a thriving career and make millions happy, yet was one of the most unhappy people and was struggling on the inside of his own mind. When it comes to social media and becoming an overnight sensation it has become quite easier for people to become famous. A lot of people are making it to the top a lot quicker than previously thought. But there are still amazing artists and bands out there who still tour, sell t shirts, and CDs, before they ever make a big name for themselves. Not everyone becomes a sensation overnight. The ones that are here to stay are the ones who actually take the time to become big hits.
