Place the following in order of decreasing X-A-X bond angle, where A represents the central atom and X represents the outer atoms in each molecule. hcn h2o h3o+

(Please explain how to figure it out)

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. HCN- 180 degrees

Based on VSEPR Theory (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory) the electron clouds on atoms around the C will repel each other. As a result they will be pushed apart giving the HCN molecule a linear molecular geometry or shape. The HCN bond angle will be 180 degrees since it has a linear molecular geometry.

2. H20

104.5

However, there is one important difference - the bond angles for water are not 109.5. Because of the presence of the very negative lone pair electrons, the two hydrogens are squeezed together as the two lone pairs try to get away from each other as far as possible. The resulting angle gives water a 104.5bond angle.

3. The hydronium ion(H3O+) has a trigonal pyramidal geometry and is composed of three hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. There is a lone pair of electrons on the oxygen giving it this shape. The bond angle between the atoms is 113 degrees.
