vWhat is the function of the MHC antigens? Why are the genes that encode these antigens so variable

Solutions

Expert Solution

MHC of Major Histocompatibility Complex antigens refers to a set of cell surface proteins that are essential in generating an adaptive immune response to a pathogen. The main function of these MHC antigens is to bind the peptide fragments derived from a pathogen and display them on the cell surface. This makes it possible for the appropriate T cells to recognize the peptide fragment and take necessary action against the pathogen.

The genes encoding MHC are highly polymorphic. This means that there are multiple alleles encoding for the MHC antigen in each individual of the population. The polymorphic region will code for the peptide binding cleft of the MHC molecule. MHC antigens on the cell surface will therefore have a broad specificty because they will be able to bind many types of possible petides derived from a pathogen. This allelic diversity in MHC genes ensures an adequate immune response against a pathogen.
