Comprehension means capacity of the individual to perceive and understand. Reading comprehension is the capacity to perceive and understand meanings communicated by texts. Reading informational text is acquiring knowledge about something through reading provided text and comprehending effectively.
Guidelines to students about reading informational text:
1. Main aim of lesson on reading is to acquire information in correct and meaningful manner.
2. Passages will be provided as exercises, students need to extract important points by going through the passages.
3. Read the passage from the beginning without any skipping.
4. Try to mark important points covered in the passage.
5. Try to get comprehend essence of passage.
6. Try to figure out is title provided is suitable for passage.
7. Try to summarize/compress the passage in your own words.
8. Try to give new title if possible.
These steps will serve as guidelines for having effective reading comprehension skill.
Aim of lesson: Make students understand and develop optimal reading skills.
At the beginning, students will be provided small passage to read and answer a few questions related to passage. This will draw attention of students and also gauge the reading ability.
Further, the students will be provided with above-mentioned guidelines. Points in the guidelines will be explained to the students in detail, making them get fair idea on what they are going to learn in the lesson. Learning outcome will be explained to the students, making them aware what are the expectations of lesson. Assist the students develop the comprehension skills, where they can get gist of the informational phrases and understand correct meaning. Educate the students on different factors of reading comprehension. Assist the student to integrate previously learned knowledge with new skills and enhance ability to comprehend effectively. Provide real life examples and identify where the comprehension may go wrong. Administer some tests to check ability of the students and then continue with required teaching and finally conclude.
