Identify the three criteria you consider to be most important in determining whether or not a system is a quality system. Briefly discuss your rationale for selecting these criteria.

Redundancy as it ensures that systems are up regardless if something fails ensure the business can continue. Reliability is another important factor as users should know that the systems they are using is reliable. Lastly would be N-versions programming as it helps reduce the amount of software errors you can run into and help improve user reliability on the systems.

Why is the system-human interface one of the most important but difficult areas of safety-critical systems? Do a search on online and find three good sources of information relating to how to design an effective system-human interface. Include the web address to your 3 sources in your answer,

System-human interface is one of the most important and difficult areas of safety-critical system. Safety-critical systems are those systems that cause death or human loss if those systems will fail or some errors will occur in those systems. In a system, the performance of hardware and software is predictable but human behavior cannot be predicted. The main objective of System-human interface is to improve system performance as there is an interaction between a system and user. The human operator’s failure rate will be high. In a complex system, it is difficult to understand human errors.

To design an effective system-human interface there are three good sources of information:

1. Effective: An effective system-human interface will be more effective. They should do what they are supposed to do. They should do their task very quickly and it should be cost-effective.

2. Efficient: What task they are going to be done, the idea of that must be clear and must be easy to use.

3. Safe: In safety-critical systems, it must be error-free.

What is the difference between system reliability and system safety? Give an example of a system that operates reliably but not safely.

System reliability is the probability that a device will do its job without any issues or failures, System safety falls under how safe a system can be used without injury. Reliability is how your phone is reliable enough to make calls and access internet resource, system safety is ensuring your phone doesn’t heat up to the point where it can burn your hands or face

In any system defects can cause failure. The system will be failure because of poor quality system, hardware or software malfunctions, errors etc. The special precautions must be taken by organizations. For that, technical staff must have knowledge about reliability and safety of the systems.

Difference between system reliability and system safety:

System reliability

System safety

Reliability is the probability that a device or system will perform a function without any error or failure.

The system is called safe if any injury or loss does not take place.

Reliability depends on the capability of the system.

Safety depends on the ability of the system.

If the system is reliable, it can be safe or unsafe.

If the system is safe, it can be less reliable.

A system could be reliable but not safe. For example, if an aero plane is flying in the correct direction and supposed to land safely so that it is considerable reliable. If a software error occurs, it cannot land safely. It will end up crashing and the people will seriously injured, it is certainly unsafe.
