Identify the compounds that are soluble in both water and hexane.
A) methanol and ethanol
B) ethanol and 1-butanol
C) ethanol and 1-propanol
D) 1-butanol and 1-pentanol
E) 1-propanol and 1-butanol

Solutions

Expert Solution

At first , it is con fusing that what are you talking about.. completely soluble or miscible?? So I m here mentioning for each compond.

for ethanol-

The unique solubility of ethanol is due mainly to its very versatile nature as it has both a polar and non-polar end. Hexane, which does not have a hydrogen group and is non-polar, is not soluble in or miscible with water, which is the most polar substance. But since ethanol has a non-polar hydrocarbon chain and a polar OH group, it is both soluble in and miscible with water and also miscible with hexane.

solubility in water-

methanol and propanol are miscible.. as the carbon chain increases the hydrophobic part also increases and solubility in water decreases. so 1-pentanol will be least soluble in water.

solubility in hexane-

As the number of carbon increases, the solubility of alchohol in hexane increases due to the same reason.

hope this answer will be helpfull to you. thank you

Methanol and ethanol are both oxidized by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). Methanol is poisonous because it is oxidized by ADH to form the highly toxic compound formaldehyde. The adult body has 40 L of water, throughout which these alcohols are rapidly and uniformly distributed. The densities of both alcohols are 0.79 g/mL. The Km of ADH for ethanol is 1.0x10-3 M, and for methanol the Km is 1.0x10-2 M. The molecular mass of methanol is 32 g/mol and that of ethanol...
