Let’s imagine that you sent a ship towards the Sun, and at a distance of 20 million km (2x10^10 m), which is halfway between the Sun and Mercury, you suddenly opened the reflective solar sail and thrusted towards Pluto. Estimate the velocity of the spacecraft as it reaches back the Earth on its way towards Pluto. Assume that the initial velocity was 0 (when sail was deployed close to the Sun). The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 150 million km, and the Sun’s power is 3.8x10^26 W. Assume the reflective sail is 200 x 200 m^2 and mass of the spacecraft is 100 kg.
Have in mind that the light intensity reaching the sail decreases as the spacecraft moves further from the Sun. Include this fact in your estimate.

For this problem, imagine that you are on a ship that is oscillating up and down on a rough sea. Assume for simplicity that this is simple harmonic motion (in the vertical direction) with amplitude 5 cm and frequency 2 Hz. There is a box on the floor with mass m = 1kg. (a)Assuming the box remains in contact with the floor throughout, find the maximum and minimum values of the normal force exerted on it by the floor over...

The Venus-Sun distance is 108 million kilometers, and the Earth-Sun distance is 150 million kilometers. Suppose an imaginary line from Venus to the Sun forms a right angle with an imaginary line from Earth to the Sun. How long would it take light to travel from the Sun to a spaceship halfway along the straight-line path between Venus and Earth? The time is in minutes.

Let’s imagine you are the customer portfolio manager of a wireless phone company. How should you be evaluated at the end of the quarter? Straight sales form your customer? Net sales (Sales minus cost to serve)? Customer satisfaction? Would it make more sense for you to be evaluated on a combination of how much your company made from your customers this quarter and also- as of this quarter- what the two-year projected value of your customer base is? A Space ship of mass 5000 kg is heading towards the moon and wants to change its trajectory by 20 degrees relative to original path. The rocket has a velocity of 110 m/s. How much gas must be used up if it burns its rockets (using up fuel) and expels gas at a velocity of 1200 m/s (perpendicular to its direction of motion)? Please show and explain as much work as possible. Thank you!
