What common morphological characteristics do we use to divide the largest groups (subphyla) of Arthropods?
What are the 5 subphyla of Arthropoda and how are they defined (which morphological characteristics)?
Arthropods are made of two words (arthos - joint , pods - foot). That means animals with joint feet are known as arthropods . 1- it is largest phylum and include about 80% of total animal .it has about 900000 species . 2- it has system organization and bilateral symmetry . 3 - Germ layer these are triploblastic animals . 4 - These are first animals to have endocrine system . some insect secret pheromones .5- it's body is divided into head , thorax and abdomen but when it has two parts head and thorax fused together , known as cephalothorax and abdomen (head and trunk fused ) . 6 - Many arthropods have compound eye with mosaic vision , but prawn have statocysts .
5 Subphylum - 1- Trilobitomorpha 2- Chelicerata 3- Crustaceans 4 - Myriapoda 5 - Hexapoda
1Trilobitomorpha- These are extinct animals . its classified into two class (a) Chilopoda , body is divided into head and trunk and tracheal respiration. (b) Diplopoda , body is divided into head, thorax and abdomen and terrestrial in habitat .
2- Chelicerata - ithas special type of appendages called chelicerae .it lack mandible and maxillae for taking food .
3Crustacean- Body is divided into cephalothorax and abdomen . cephalothorax is covered by shield called carapace . it has five pair of appendages . branchial respiration etc. Ex prawn , Daphnia etc.
4- Myriapoda - it is terrestrial animals . it has a specialized appendages known as forpicules . body is divided into head and trunk .single pair if antennae takes place as sensory organs.
5 - Hexapoda - it has six legs so it's known as hexapods .it lack antennae and eye . it lives in soil and it has about to 1000 species .
