RN's want to be effective delegators, and new RN's struggle with
how to delegate (Finkleman & Kenner 2019). Evaluation is often
a neglected step in the delegation process itself.
Provide and evaluate an example of delegation that you have
witnessed or experienced in your clinical settling. Support your
answer with the use two references, one of which can be your text,
and cite in APA format.
Address the following questions:
1. Was the delegation successful?
2. Was the activity performed correctly?
3. Was the client/family expected outcome achieved?
4. What was challenging; how were concerns addressed?
5. Were there any learning moments for the assistant and or the nurse?
ANSWER:
Delegation is defined as the transfer of responsibility for the performance of a task from one person to another" "Transferring to a competent individual the authority to perform a selected nursing task in a selected nursing situation . The nurse retains accountability for delegation.
Delegation- “the act of empowering to act for another”.
5 Rights to delegation
Delegation from the perspectives of both nursing service administrator and staff nurse:
Right task
Right circumstance
Right person
Right direction/communication
Right supervision/evaluation.
Delegation Process
EXAMPLE:
Marry, an HCA, is working in the respiratory clinic . She performs spirometry on a patient, having been previously assessed as competent to carry this out following training and education in spirometry (ability). The role forms part of her job description (responsibility). The respiratory nurse has delegated this activity (authority) to her in full knowledge of her level of competence and job description. The nurse retains the professional responsibility of appropriate delegation and Marry, though not currently regulated, is accountable.
The following questions needs to be addressed:
Q1. Was the delegation successful?
A: Yes, it was completely successfull and it was in the best interest of the patient.
Q2.. Was the activity performed correctly?
A: Yes, as Mary was given proper education and training.
Q3. Was the client/family expected outcome achieved?
A: YES, client got relieved.
Q4:What was challenging; how were concerns addressed?
A: The major challange was the low self confidence of MARY, but it was beutifully handeled by the Nurse by providing enough education and training. Also each time after evaluation , feedback was also provided to Mary.
