Gastric Analysis
Gastric Analysis is a medical procedure by which the analysis of Gastric fluid is done with the sample of Gastric juice / or whole amount obtained from the stomach through a Nasogastrc tube.
Indications
1. Obscure Gastric pain
2. severe Gastritis :
Inflammation of Gastric mucosa ( lining of the stomach) characterised by nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort .
3. Zollinger - Ellison syndrome
A disorder where increased levels of hormone gastrin are produced , causing the stomach to produce excess of Hydrochloric acid, often caused by a tumor of the duodenum or Pancreas resulting in Peptic ulcers.
Nursing interventions
1. Educate the patient about the procedure, its need, method and potential complications and obtain the informed consent ( Before procedure and consent , patient should aware about the procedure)
2. Nurse should ensure that patient should be Nil per Oral for 8 to 10hrs prior to the test.( according to physician's order)
3. Each specimen should be labelled with the amount and time of collection along with patient identification.
Potential complications
1. Improper position of Gastric tube and esophageal perforation
2. Gastric bleeding
3. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or distention ( followed by the removal of Gastric tube).
Outcome / Evaluation
1. Normal range of Fasting volume : 20 to 100ml
Fasting pH <2, Basal acid output : 0- 5mmol/ hr.
( increased secretion indicates gastric ulcer, too excessive secretion indicates Zollinger Ellison Syndrome)
2. Achlorhydria : Complete absence of stomach acid.
3. Assess for any discomfort due to the removal of gstric tube. Evaluate the patient condition after the procedure. ( provide lozenges for throat irritation)
Patient Education
1. Educate the patient about the procedure; need, method and complications ( if any) before the procedure.
2. Instruct the patient to be Nil per Oral before 8 hrs ( not to take any food or fluids).
3. Explain the patient, that there will be throat irritation after the procedure, due to the insertion and removal of tube and instruct him to report about any discomforts.
