How might the language a person uses influence his
or her social status and credibility? Give examples
of statements often categorized as "powerless" and
statements considered to be "powerful."
Compare and contrast equivocal language, relative
words, and abstract language.
When do you consider it acceptable to use euphe-
misms and equivocal language? When do you think
such language is confusing or unfair?
Identify examples of troublesome language in a
movie or television show. How could you become
more mindful of similar patterns in your own
communication?
In your own words, describe the similarities and dif-
ferences between characteristically male and female
language as outlined on pages 116-119.
How do these similarities and differences compare to
your use of language? To the linguistic style of people
you know well?
If the language you use is closest to the "masculine"
styles described, when and how might you use "femi-
nine" strategies to expand your repertoire? If your
style is more "feminine," when and how might you
use "masculine" styles effectively?
1- Language is a medium of communication but an effective language influence communication and works as a catalyst. Selection of words and the manner of dialogue delivery give an ability to influence the behavior of a person which the makes credibility and the level of pronunciation, the effectiveness of language and tone creates a great impact which is very important for social status.
2- Equivocal language is a verbal expression which can be interpreted in different ways sometimes known as double meaning words or sentences. The use of equivocal language helps the speaker to deliver comments with a space of protection. Generally, political leaders and media houses use equivocal language and interpret it in different ways.
3- The use of equivocal language is helpful for that speaker who wants to deliver a message but afraid of criticism so they use double meaning words which could be interpreted according to their personal interests. I think the use of equivocal language in formal ways will create confusion and reduce credibility.
4- Movies or TV shows uses ordinary language with some abstract meanings and unethical words, if we consider this language according to the social norms, we would have known that this language uses offensive but effective sentences. I don’t think that we can use this type of language in our general communication.
5- The male language uses offensive and hard words while the female language uses emotional and soft words. Abusing, extensive dialogues and use of offensive words are basic elements of male language. The female language deals with soft words, emotional verbal expressions and lack of offensive dialogues.
6- My language is influenced by the social environment but the language of linguistics depends on the literature and formal way. The ordinary language is different than formal language.
7- If we handing a situation where offensive behavior is necessary and we want to aggressively influence the languages, the masculine language will be better but if we are trying to handle the situation is soft ways we needs feminist language.
