Find 1-3 popular slogans for products or companies you use regularly. Determine if figurative language is used in any of them and identify where.
Figurative language includes the use of similes, metaphors, pun,
personification, apostrophe, paradox, metonymy or symbols in the
message, to communicate the intended meaning to the recipient
indirectly. Some examples of slogans used in advertising that use
figurative language are:
• “Easy as Dell “. This slogan is used by Dell. This
slogan includes the use of simile, i.e. figure of speech likening a
thing to another. So here, Dell is likened with ease, to enhance
the use ease of Dell products.
• “Open Happiness”. This slogan is used by Coca Cola to
market their soda, where they are using a metaphor to convey the
message. Metaphors are used to describe a thing in terms of the
other thing, implicitly. Here, coca-cola is stating that opening a
bottle of coca-cola, or the experience of having it, is the same as
feeling happy.
• “It gives you wings”. Red Bull uses this slogan,
where it uses metaphor to state that the experience of having a red
bull is the same as flying, as in invigorating.
