Expert Solution

Night blindness is a type of vision impairment also known as nyctalopia. People with night blindness experience poor vision at night or in dimly lit environments. IDENTITY CAUSE AND TREAT.

A few eye conditions can cause night blindness, including:

  • nearsightedness, or blurred vision when looking at faraway objects
  • cataracts, or clouding of the eye’s lens
  • retinitis pigmentosa, which occurs when dark pigment collects in your retina and creates tunnel vision
  • Usher syndrome, a genetic condition that affects both hearing and vision
  • Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions where damage to the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, causes pressure in the eye. This may impair vision, which can be permanent.

Older adults have a greater risk of developing cataracts. They’re therefore more likely to have night blindness due to cataracts than children or young adults. Cataracts can be removed through surgery. Replace your cloudy lens with a clear, artificial lens. Night blindness will improve significantly after surgery if this is the underlying cause.

Vitamin A deficiency can also lead to night blindness.

Vitamin A or retinol, plays a role in transforming nerve impulses into images in the retina. The retina is a light-sensitive area in the back of your eye.

Eat foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, which may help prevent cataracts. Also, choose foods that contain high levels of vitamin A to reduce your risk of night blindness.

Certain orange-colored foods are excellent sources of vitamin A, including cantaloupes

, sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkins

, butternut squash, mangoes. Vitamin A is also rich in spinach, collard greens, milk, eggs

Gyrate atrophy is a degeneration of the retina that begins in late adolescence as night blindness and progresses to blindness. The cause is mutation in the gene that encodes a mitochondrial enzyme, ornithine aminotransferase (OAT), on chromosome 10. This autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism causes build up in body fluids of ornithine, which derives from the amino acid arginine, found in dietary protein. Researchers sequenced the OAT gene for five patients with the following results: Patient A: A change...

Late one night, a patient being treated after cardiac arrest expresses to her family and health care providers her desire to forego further resuscitation efforts. Her family does not agree with her decision. The health care providers believe that the patient is sufficiently competent to make her own choices. However, a second cardiac arrest occurs before legal action is taken. Discuss the issues involved when patients, their families, and health care providers disagree.

In some horse populations, blindness can be a common trait. Let’s assume this trait is controlled by one gene, where dominant allele B produces a normal sighted horse and recessive allele b leads to blindness in homozygosity. A wild horse researcher determines that the frequency of blind horses in a specific population of wild horses in Nevada is 0.04. Which of the following scenarios would make the wild horse population of Nevada no longer in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for the blindness...
