Calculate delta H (298) and delta S (298) for the following reactions? a) 2 TiO + 1/2 O2 = Ti2O3 b) 3 Ti2O3 + 1/2O2 = 2Ti3O5 c) Ti3O5 + 1/2O2 = 3TiO2

Solutions

Expert Solution

You need to provide standard enthalphy change of fromation delta Hf of all the components.

Even wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_enthalpy_change_of_formation_%28data_table%29

doesn't have these values of all. So your question cant be solved numerically. But i will give you the expressions and you can substitute the values as your teacher told:

a) 2 TiO + 1/2 O2 = Ti2O3

delta H(rxn) = delta Hf(Ti2O3) - 2*delta Hf(TiO) - (1/2)*delta Hf(O2)
delta Hf(O2) = 0
So,
delta H(rxn) = delta Hf(Ti2O3) - 2*delta Hf(TiO)
Get these 2 values and substitute to get the answer. I dont have these values and neither did you provide

b) 3 Ti2O3 + 1/2O2 = 2Ti3O5
delta H(rxn) = 2*delta Hf(Ti3O5) - 3*delta Hf(Ti2O3 ) - (1/2)*delta Hf(O2)
delta Hf(O2) = 0
So,
delta H(rxn) = 2*delta Hf(Ti3O5) - 3*delta Hf(Ti2O3 )
Get these 2 values and substitute to get the answer. I dont have these values and neither did you provide

c) Ti3O5 + 1/2O2 = 3TiO2
delta H(rxn) = 3*delta Hf(TiO2) - delta Hf(Ti3O5 ) - (1/2)*delta Hf(O2)
delta Hf(O2) = 0
So,
delta H(rxn) = 3*delta Hf(TiO2) - delta Hf(Ti3O5 )
Get these 2 values and substitute to get the answer. I dont have these values and neither did you provide
