Why is it important to assess range of motion in both acute and chronically ill patients
When patient is being admitted to the hospital under critical care unit it becomes neccessory to assess range of motion in both the acute patients and chronic ill patients.
1. As there was decreased range of motion of large joints observed such as knee, elbow and ankle during hospitalization.
2. Patient shows decreased ROM of elbows, knee, ankle and other joints of body.
3. Shortening of connective tissues is the major factor responsible for immobility, disuse and hypomobility which leads to the increased muscle contraction in the body of patient admitted.
4. Range of motion was also dependant of length of hospitalization stay in ICU.
5. Reduced mobility also has other possible resons such as edema, use of catheters, venous access and hemodynamic & neurological changes.
Considering all the above factors range of motion in acute and chronically ill patients was considered to be most important factor
