H2S + HNO3 ----> H2SO4 + H2O(l) + NO2 (g)

balance in acidic solution, show all steps.

Solutions

Expert Solution

H2S + HNO3 ----> H2SO4 + H2O(l) + NO2 (g)

This is redox reaction and we do it by using following steps.

Step1 :

Oxidation and reduction half balancing ( without O and H)

Oxidation:

H2S ----> H2SO4

Reduction:

HNO3 --- > NO2

Step 2 :

Balancing O and H

4H2O +H2S ----> H2SO4   + 8 H+

Reduction:

H+ +   HNO3 --- > NO2     + 1H2O

Step 3 :

Charge and electron balance.

4H2O +H2S ----> H2SO4   + 8 H+ + 8 e-

8H+ +   8e-   +   8HNO3 --- > 8 NO2     + 8H2O

Step 4

Addition of these two halves

4H2O +H2S ----> H2SO4   + 8 H+ + 8 e-

8H+ +   8e-   +   8HNO3 --- > 8 NO2     + 8H2O

---------------------------------------------------------

H2S+ 8HNO3 --- > H2SO4 + 8 NO2    + 4H2O
